  • Description:
  • We are offering a Postdoctoral Fellowship linked to a project funded by FAPESP, along with other Brazilian foundations (CNPq and state foundations in the Amazon) and European foundations (United Kingdom and Switzerland) under the Amazonia + 10 Program. The project titled “Amazonian BioTechQuilombo - Amazonian Biodiversity, Technological Assessment, and Knowledge Exchange with Quilombos” aims to study various components of biodiversity in quilombola areas of the Amazon region. Quilombos are Afro-Brazilian communities originally formed by escaped enslaved Africans and their descendants, who resisted colonial oppression by establishing autonomous settlements. These communities have developed rich cultural and ecological knowledge, which is now recognized as crucial for biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management in the Amazon. Today, Quilombos continue to fight for land rights, cultural preservation, and environmental justice. The project acknowledges their role as key conservation actors, ensuring their knowledge is central to biodiversity research. In this project, the Aquatic Biology Laboratory at UNESP in Assis (Assis, SP, Brazil) will primarily focus on the taxonomic and ecological study of aquatic insects, including the development of a DNA sequence database for the COI and 12s genes of these organisms. This database will serve as a foundation for eDNA-based studies. The fellow, besides assisting with sample collection, will work in the Aquatic Biology Laboratory with a focus on the molecular aspects of the project. Additionally, the fellow will help train students/researchers in molecular methods, including laboratory routines and data analysis such as protocol adjustments, building a COI and 12s sequence database, and methods applied to species delimitation, eDNA, molecular phylogenetics, genomic data, etc. This position will be funded by FAPESP for 36 months, with a monthly stipend of R$ 12,000.00 (US$ 2,156.00). There is also the possibility to conduct research abroad through an additional request to FAPESP. Requirements for this position: 1. Hold a PhD degree obtained within the last 5 years; 2. Experience in molecular biology applied to biodiversity studies; 3. Availability to train students/researchers in molecular biology, helping to develop this area at the Aquatic Biology Laboratory at UNESP in Assis. Interested candidates should send by email to Prof. Pitágoras C. Bispo (pcbispo@gmail.com) by 07/31/2025, including: a) A letter of interest describing: i) your motivation and interest in working on this project; and ii) the molecular methods you are proficient in related to biodiversity; b) your Curriculum. Selection will be based on the motivation letter, with particular emphasis on the molecular methods the candidate is skilled in, and on the Curriculum. If necessary, an additional interview via video call may be conducted. The position is open to both Brazilian and foreign applicants. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship of R$ 12,000.00 (US$ 2,156,00) per month, plus a Technical Reserve of 10% of the annual fellowship amount to be used for project research expenses.
